About Steef

Steef Crombach (b. 1992) was born in Maastricht in the South of the Netherlands. Crombach earned her B.F.A from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague in 2014. In the Netherlands, Crombach got nominated for the Royal Award for Modern Painting by Dutch King Willem-Alexander and received the renowned ‘Stipendium for emerging Artists’ from the Mondriaan Fund. Her work “wat een zonde/What a shame” won the ‘Stroom Talent Invest Prize’ in 2014, through which she was able to research craft techniques and local iconography in the United States. She officially relocated to the United States in 2019, where she became BigMedium’s first Artists-in-Residence and showed solo at Ivester Contemporary and W&TW.

Crombach’s experimental yet technically intentional processes with fabric highlight the often intangible nature of change and create a deeper understanding of our present time, place, and culture.
