Austin Studio Tour
Big Medium is pleased to announce this year’s Austin Studio Tour, a free, self-guided citywide celebration of art featuring over 530 Austin-based artists and collaboratives. The Austin Studio Tour introduces the public to new ways of experiencing art and the creative practices of artists around our city. The studio tour combines the former East and West Austin Studio Tours into one citywide event presented on three November weekends.
In its 20th iteration, the Austin Studio Tour has become an Austin tradition. It continues Big Medium’s mission of fostering connections between artists while presenting the public with a rare opportunity to engage and connect with many creatives that help define the culture of our city.
During the two weekends of the East Austin Studio Tour, ‘Badlucky Market’ will open their doors to the public.
Resident artists GD Wright, Rex Hamilton, and Steef Crombach will show new work and work in progress in their place of creation. ‘Badlucky Market’ will also create a multitude of activations of the space like screenprinting sessions and a gift shop with work from a group of guest artists.
In my studio, I created a ‘subtle circus’ vibe with a mural and moody lighting to brace yourself for urban grit. My main focus for the tour will be my ’embrace failure bears’, plush soft sculptures that get sown from the fabric of past failed Batiks. It’s so easy to take yourself too seriously as an artist, lingering endlessly in concept and pre-drafting patterns, ideas, and technique combinations. Sometimes this leads to great work; sometimes, this leads to forgetting what brings you joy in making art.
My bears are a product of full self-forgiveness, created in this hard place between discovery and ultimate failure. I hope to expand this feeling of self-forgiveness and self-kindness to my viewer by changing my failing into a soft and huggable result.
