DOLLAR STORE WHOLESALE
Within my work, I hope to highlight the often intangible nature of change and create a deeper understanding of our shared visual reality by stimulating curiosity and intentional observation of our present time and place.
My work ‘Dollar Store Wholesale’ is inspired by the Big Star Bingo Gorilla in Austin Texas; an American commercial sculpture set on the pavement in front of the establishment. In my research, I investigate its meaning, position, and reason to be. In this process I uncovered a secret life; the intangible sculpture, aided by its commercial purposes is morphing over time and place.
This specific monkey sculpture shows up with different masks, colors, expressions and meaning in cities across the United States. In my iteration the monkey is tumbled over and crushed by a shopping card, emphasizing the overarching commercial purpose of the inspiration sculptures. The white sculpture resembles classical Roman sculpture in color and its sanded-down appearance relates to how I see objects of its sort slowly disappear from our daily urban landscape; soon to become a classic, a contemporary memory.
The sculpture is made of flocked expansion foam (created with my fabric mold-making invention) combined with found objects.

About the Artist
eSteef Crombach is a Dutch artist living and working in Los Angeles (California) and Austin (Texas).
Inspired by all that’s weird around her, she transforms fabric into soft sculptures and hand-dyed relief tapestries. Art has enabled her to make her starry-eyed disposition into strength, inviting others to view the world through her zoom lens. She allows people to see what invisibly shapes their immediate environment and how they are steered and positioned within it. With this, she hopes to highlight the often intangible nature of change and create a deeper understanding of our shared visual reality.
